You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men.       Matthew 5:13

God’s people are His preserving agents for a world that is corrupted and degenerating because of sin. Your life is designed and commissioned by God to enhance a community and to preserve what is good and right. There is deep significance today for a godly life that is involved in its community. The presence of Christ in you makes all that He is available to others. His salvation can free an addict, mend a broken home, heal the pain of the past, restore a wayward child, and comfort a grieving heart. All of this is available to those around you as Christ expresses His life through you.

If we are not in a right relationship with our Lord, however, Jesus said we are like salt that has lost its saltiness and is, therefore, good for nothing. None of God’s saving grace and power can be dispensed through us to others. How do we test the “saltiness” of our life? Look at our family. Are we preserving it from the destructive influences that surround it? Examine our workplace. Are the sinful influences in our work environment being halted because we are there? Observe our community. Is it a better place because we are involved in it? What about our church? The evidence that we have been used by God as a preserving agent is that things are becoming spiritually better around us instead of worse. If people around us are deteriorating spiritually, we need to go to our Lord and allow Him to adjust our lives so that we can be used to preserve others.

You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. Matthew 5:13
A colleague of mine at the hospital where I worked in Kenya once mentioned this verse in a devotion she gave. When growing up in the 1950’s in central Kenya which is forested, they used a white mineral for salting their food. When it no longer had the salt property activity, it was put out on the paths around the village which gave a little bit of light at night in the otherwise dark ground in the forests. So it truly was trampled underfoot by men.

This is a great lesson. I’m too often imperfect at being the example of Christ that I should be. Too often I accept what’s going on and join in the fun. Other times I’m better at being an example of Christ and His love.
It’s very easy to become influenced by the world around us. But God desires for us to be a positive influence on others in our circles of influence. In conflict avoidance, we often just accept the fallen nature of our culture. We don’t want to appear judgmental or condescending. But we do hold the secret of the universe. Merely going to church, being generous with those in our community and family and trying to help others may not appear to be enough at times.
Those we embrace in love, community and friendship may not accept the gift of God that is freely available to all who seek Him. Sometimes our efforts and compassion are rewarded with bitterness, resentment and ultimately rejection. Sometimes it is our own family that may reject us. People grow up and rethink their faith and sometimes adopt a non Christian world view. That is not our fault. Everyone is gifted with free will. With that, we all decide to follow God or follow other beliefs. The world can deceive us and convince us that God is not the answer. The forbidden fruit and a lifestyle that is attracted to that false hope and world view is attractive.
We may be wrongfully blamed for things that we did not do or did not intend to do. As we are all human, we fail miserably living to God’s high standards.
Our Pastor reminded us that we are to focus on Freindship, Faith and Forgiveness. We share our faith with friends. We forgive them and they forgive us for our weaknesses. And our friends lift us up with their faith as we lift others up with our faith.
Having just gone through a tough period in our life we have finally concluded that it is not healthy to blame yourself for broken relationships. You can try all you want but only Jesus can change someone’s heart. You can invest all of your time, energy and love in people who may turn on you and hurt or reject you. So how do you process that. Grief and grieving is normal. We try to figure things through mentally. But sometimes the battle is spiritual. The power of sin is captivating and addictive. To move away from that which is sinful may indeed seem insurmountable. Only God can accomplish salvation. If you fail, move on. Turn it over to God. Forgive others and make new friends and family where you are. Don’t forget your true friends and family. God will reach those who hurt and reject you. Don’t dwell on it too long. It will only poison your life and make you miserable and ineffective.
We are to be the light of the world. We are to be the feet and hands of Christ. Christ is the prototype we are to emulate and was perfect in every way. People still rebelled and rejected him unto the point of nailing him to a cross and his painful death.
Failing to bring loved ones to Christ is not in our power as human beings. We are supposed to share that “saltiness” of the truth we possess with other through our relationships. But sometimes people reject Christ. And fallen people often reject the messenger along with the message.
If you have been hurt by friends, co-workers, neighbors, family or others count it all joy. Because Christ too was rejected. We may share in the suffering. And may bring us closer to God and make us more mature Christians.

  4. Yes, we need to go to GOD, and allow HIM to adjust our lives so we can be used by God to preserve others.

We really shouldn’t lose our opportunities to be Salt in the world, because then there will be no flavor or seasoning for things to be better in the world.

Things should be better because we the Salt of the earth were present. People should notice a difference when we are around for the better to work out.

GOD uses people, and we who belong and Believe in HIM, should allow ourselves to be used by GOD. Being, the Salt of the earth, will not only bring flavor to our lives, but also for the lives of others to see the Glory of GOD.
