Casting all your care upon Him, for He cares for you. 1 Peter 5:7
As you’ve no doubt discovered, becoming a Christian does not make your problems go away. But it does give you an Advocate to whom you can take every concern. The Christians Peter addressed were facing persecution. They did not know whom they could trust; a friend, a neighbor, or even a family member could betray them, resulting in suffering and even death. But Peter had walked with the risen Christ, and he had personally experienced the love that Jesus had for His followers. He knew that Christ was in control, capable of handling every trial and that He wanted to do so as an expression of His love.
Casting our cares is a choice. It means consciously handing over our anxiety to Christ and allowing Him to carry the weight of our problems. At times this is the most difficult part of trusting God! We don’t like turning over the responsibility for our problems. We have been taught that self-reliance is good and praiseworthy. We may even enjoy worrying. Yet if we are to be freed from the burden of our concerns, we must choose to cast them into the strong hands of our Father.
Peter does not distinguish between little cares and big cares. God does not differentiate between problems we should handle on our own and God-sized needs. He asks us to turn them all over to Him. One of our greatest errors is to assume we can deal with something ourselves, only to discover that we really can’t.
God sees you as His frail child, burdened with a load that surpasses your strength. He stands prepared to take your load and to carry it for you. Will you let Him?

Sir, I respectfully do not agree with all of your teaching in this lesson. I do not think we must turn over “all” of our burdens to Him. I believe He has given us knowledge, wisdom and abilities to solve many things. We need to do this. That is how we grow in Christ. If I have a flat tire I change it and I praise Him for letting me do something. My son grew in character when I allowed him to solve some situations.
I am a longtime fan of the Blackabys. Your son was once my pastor at Bow Valley Bapt. Church in Cockrain, Alberta, Canada. Also as a speaker at Ga. Bapt. Conf. Cent. At Toccoa.

Walt, I am glad you enjoy our devotional! Thanks for letting us know of your concern. Two things:
First, Peter said to cast “all” of our cares on Him, not just some. Not just the ones that were too big for us to handle. Let me caution you to beware of modifying what the Scripture ACTUALLY SAYS! It will lead to an incorrect opinion every time! Peter said to cast them all on God.
Second, it says “cares,” not responsibilities. Cares are your concerns, worries, and fears. He did not say, leave all the work for God. He said, to cast any worry, anxiety (“cares”) that you have as you undertake your responsibilities, cast THOSE on Him. You still do the work, but God takes away your concerns.

One day as I was rushing to get things done. My concern was time. I had to go to Costco after work to pick up a food plater for an event. Go home and get ready. Well everyone who shops at Costco knows the parking issue. I asked the Lord to please give me a parking up front and make the check out lines go quickly.
Some sisters would say they would never do that.
It was a concern and it meant alot to me. So I asked and God provided. I couldn’t have asked for better. I was so touched by His love.

Thank you for the great insight Pastor Richard! The scripture never ceases to amaze as much as God Himself. I realize that is why we need to meditate and study it day and night that we may be careful to do everything written on it. And not to read it casually in one quick glance because we’ll be missing out the whole point. The mystery of the scripture, the Word is alive and everytime we read the Word, it gives a different perspective and learning. God blesses all of you who help us understands.

Thank you so much for your gentle reminder to keep rooted in the scripture and avoid our own interpretations. It is so easy to be tempted into our own beliefs which bring limited comfort. I have ( as many of us do ) called upon God in moments of crisis and uncertainty and distress but also for the little things that affect my daily life. In each God has responded with care. It’s easy to attribute Gods intervention to luck or chance. I have been fortunate enough to have experience immediate care, comfort and assistance from God’s angels in my darkest times. I am learning that my peace comes when I cast my cares upon my God, my Lord and Savior.
